HALO Home Voice

Your HALO Home Voice Smart Recessed Downlight can be controlled from your HALO Home App or HALO Home accessories. Your HALO Home Voice conveniently contains an Amazon Alexa, allowing you to use voice control to command your lighting (requires a HALO Home Bridge) or to use basic Alexa features. In this Quick Start Guide you will:

  1. Pair your installed HALO Home Voice Downlight to the HALO Home App.
  2. Pair your HALO Home Bridge to the HALO Home App and connect it to your Wi-Fi.
  3. Add the HALO Home skill to your Amazon Alexa App.
  4. Connect the HALO Home Voice’s Alexa to your Wi-Fi and Alexa account using the HALO Voice App.
  5. Use the HALO Voice App controls.
  6. Learn about additional features and information.

Pair Your Installed HALO Home Voice Downlight to the HALO Home App

1. Install the HALO Home Voice in your desired location

(See enclosed instruction sheet.)

Once powered your HALO Home Voice will:

  • turn ON at full brightness (100%) & 3000K color temperature (CCT)
  • flash twice to indicate that it is ready to be paired
  • display a blue LED ring around the Alexa
  • (after approx. 30 seconds) will audibly state “Speaker is not connected. Please download the app to begin setup.”

Already a HALO Home user? Open the app and skip to step 4.

2. Download the HALO Home App to your smart mobile device

3. Create a user account and validate via email

  1. Enter your email address as your user account name.
  2. Create a password of at least 8 characters and complete other entries on the mobile application “Register” screen.
  3. Once registered, verify your identity by clicking the link in your validation email.
  4. Navigate back to and login to the HALO Home App.

4. Add the HALO Home Voice Downlight to the app

IMPORTANT! iPhone 11 Users. Having issues? Please read this>

Note: Make sure your mobile device’s Bluetooth is turned on and within 40’ of the Downlight.

  1. Tap the " " menu button.
  2. Navigate to "Devices" and tap the " + " icon.

(The app will scan for your installed, unpaired devices).

  1. Select the HALO Home Voice Downlight and click “Add” to complete the pairing process.
  2. The connected light blinks once to indicate it has been paired.

Note: If the device firmware is outdated, an exclamation point will display on the device in the device list. Tap the exclamation point and following the onscreen instructions to update the device.

5. Add the Downlight to a group (optional)

Not using lighting groups? Skip to step 6.

Allow your HALO Home devices, schedules or voice commands to control multiple lights by assigning your lights to a group(s).

Note: Voice commands require a HALO Home Internet Bridge and either an Amazon Alexa or Google Home account/device.

  1. Tap the " " menu button.
  2. Navigate to “Groups” and tap the " + " icon (or select a previously created group).
  3. Enter a short unique name for your group and press “Done”.
  4. Drag and drop devices from the bottom to the top screen area to add them to the group.
  5. Tap “Next” to save the group.

6. Add the Downlight to a scene (optional)

Not using lighting scenes? Skip this step.

Command your lighting to specific levels to suit your tasks or mood by creating scenes that can be operated from your HALO Home devices, schedules or voice commands.

Note: Voice commands require a HALO Home Internet Bridge and either an Amazon Alexa or Google Home account/device.

  1. Tap the " " menu button.
  2. Navigate to “Scenes” and tap the " + " icon (or select a previously created scene).
  3. Enter a short unique name for your scene and press “ + ”.
  4. Drag and drop devices from the bottom to the top screen area to add them to the scene.
  5. Tap each device to define its light level and color temperature for the scene.
  6. Tap “Next” to save the scene.

Pair Your HALO Home Bridge to the HALO Home App and Connect it to Your Wi-Fi

Already paired and connected your Bridge? Skip to the next section.

What does the Bridge do?

The Bridge creates a secure private connection between your local HALO Home network and the HALO Home cloud service through your Wi-Fi router. With the Bridge you will be able to control and manage your HALO Home devices from anywhere using your mobile device or web browser. The Bridge also allows you to control your lights using voice control commands through Amazon Alexa or Google Home.

Note: Without the Bridge, the HALO Home Voice’s Alexa will function with standard Amazon Alexa commands but will not control your HALO Home lighting.

1. Setup your Bridge

  1. Locate your Bridge within 5 to 40 feet from your Wi-Fi router and within 70 feet of the nearest HALO Home device.
  2. Plug your Bridge into a 100-240V socket.
  3. Wait at least 2 minutes for your Bridge to initialize. The Bridge is ready once the Blue and Green indicator lights are both flashing.

2. Add the Bridge to the app

Note: Make sure your mobile device’s Bluetooth is turned on and within 40’ of the Bridge.

  1. Login to the HALO Home App.
  2. Tap the " " menu button.
  3. Navigate to "Devices" and tap the " + " icon.
    (The app will scan for your installed, unpaired devices).
  4. Select the Bridge and click “Add” to start the pairing process. The app may take up to 30 seconds to add the device. The Blue LED will turn ON solid to indicate that the Bridge is connected to your HALO Home account.

3. Add the Bridge to your Wi-Fi

Note: Stay in range. Your mobile device will need to be within 40' of the Bridge when configuring.

Once the Bridge is added to the app, the app will display “Setting Up Your Bridge”.

  1. Tap “Let’s Get Started”.
  2. When prompted, select your preferred 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi network from the available network list, and then tap “Next”.
  3. Enter the Wi-Fi network password, and then tap “Next”. The app may take up to 30 seconds to connect to the selected Wi-Fi. The Green LED will turn ON solid to indicate that your Wi-Fi is connected.
  4. Tap “Done”.

Note: Your Wi-Fi password may be different from your HALO Home account password.

4. Test the Bridge connection

Once the Bridge is configured, test the connection.

  1. Turn off your mobile device’s Bluetooth.
  2. Open the HALO Home App.
  3. Tap the " " menu button.
  4. Navigate to "Devices" and then tap the "Network" icon to verify that the app is connected remotely.
  5. Tap on the HALO Home Voice Downlight to issue ON and OFF commands or use the slider to raise or lower the light level. Visually verify that the device is responding to the commands. Once the test is complete, turn your Bluetooth back on.

Add the HALO Home skill to the Amazon Alexa App

For best results, complete the setup of any additional new HALO Home devices and create your groups and scenes before proceeding.

If you do not already have it, install the Amazon Alexa App and setup your Amazon Alexa account.

Note: Your Alexa account login and password can be different from the login and password used for your HALO Home account.

1. Add the HALO Home skill to the Amazon Alexa App

  1. Open and login to your Amazon Alexa App.
  2. In the “skills” screen, search for “HALO Home”.
  3. Select the HALO Home skill, and then tap “Enable to Use”.

2. Link your Halo Home account

Once you have enabled the HALO Home skill, a screen will open for you to enter your HALO Home account information.

  1. Enter the email address and password for your HALO Home account.
  2. Select “Allow” to grant Alexa control of your devices.
  3. Tap “Done” or close the window.
  4. When prompted, tap “Discover Devices” to load your HALO Home devices, groups and scenes into the Alexa App.
  5. Once the devices are discovered, close the Alexa App (no further setup is necessary if prompted).

Note: HALO Home devices and groups are organized under “Lights” in the Alexa App. Scenes are organized under Alexa App “Scenes”.

Connect the HALO Voice’s Alexa to Your Wi-Fi and Alexa Account Using the HALO Home Voice App

Use the HALO Home Voice App to connect the HALO Home Voice Alexa to your Wi-Fi and to your Amazon Alexa account.

1. Download the HALO Home Voice App to your smart mobile device

2. Open the HALO Home Voice App

  1. Join your mobile device to the 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network that the Alexa will connect to.
  2. Open the HALO Home Voice App.
  3. When prompted, grant the app permission to access media for full functionality, and then tap “OK” after reviewing the terms and conditions and privacy policy.

3. Add your HALO Home Voice Alexa(s) to the HALO Home Voice App

  1. On the searching screen, tap “Add Device”. If prompted allow the app to access your location.
  2. Confirm that you are connected to a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network, and then tap “Next”. If prompted allow the app to access your Bluetooth.
  3. Tap the HALO Home Voice device to setup.

  1. Enter your Wi-Fi network password, and then tap “Next”.
  2. After a moment, the HALO Home Voice Alexa will chime and state “Connected”. On the app’s success screen, tap “Next” to run a firmware update check.
  3. Select a name for the Alexa location from the provided list, or tap “Custom” to type a unique name. Tap “Next”.

  1. Tap “Get Started” and then log in using your user name and password for your Amazon Alexa account.
  2. Select “English”. The app should report that the Alexa is ready. Tap “Next” in the information screens until your Alexa device is displayed.

Note: After adding a HALO Home Voice Alexa, the next time you open the HALO Home Voice App, it will show any Alexa(s) connected to the mobile device’s Wi-Fi network. To add additional devices, tap “ + ”.

4. Test your Alexa for voice control

Your HALO Home Voice is now ready for commands.

  • Turn lighting ON or OFF: Use any HALO Home device name, group name, or scene name.
    • “Alexa, turn on Kitchen”
    • “Alexa, turn off Kitchen”
  • Raise or lower the light level: Use any HALO Home device name or group name.
    • “Alexa, raise Kitchen”
    • “Alexa, lower Kitchen”
    • “Alexa, set Kitchen to 30%”
  • Adjust the lighting color temperature: Use any HALO Home device name or group name.
    • “Alexa, make Kitchen warmer”
      • “Alexa, make Kitchen cooler”

Your HALO Home Voice’s Alexa will also operate with standard Amazon Alexa commands.

Note: When a voice command is received, the Alexa will chime and display a blue LED ring.

Use the HALO Home Voice App Controls

The HALO Home Voice App can be used for basic control of your HALO Home Voice Alexa devices. Any mobile device connected to the same Wi-Fi network will be able to operate the HALO Home Voice App.

Once the app is opened, previously connected devices will automatically appear.

  1. Control Volume: Drag the slider to control the volume of the selected Alexa.
  2. Mute the Microphone: Tap the microphone icon to mute the microphone. While muted, the LED ring will turn red and the Alexa will not respond to voice commands. Tap the icon again to unmute the microphone.
  3. Control Playback: Tap “Pause All” to pause playback on all HALO Home Voice Alexa devices. Tap “Play All” to resume playback.

Additional HALO Home Voice Features and Information

Set up a schedule for the Downlight

If you want the Downlight to turn on and off with a schedule, follow these steps:

  1. Open the HALO Home App.
  2. Press the " " menu button.
  3. Navigate to “Schedules” and tap the " + " icon.
  4. Enter a unique name for your schedule and press “OK”.
  5. Tap to select an On/Off, On or Off command.
  6. Using the dial, set your desired time.
  7. Tap the days of the week you want the schedule applied to.
  8. Tap “Save” to apply your schedule and then "Dismiss" after the confirmation notice appears.
  9. Tap “Apply” to select the Device, Group or Scene to include in the schedule.
  10. “Save” to update and save your schedule.

Override lighting manually (temporary)

To manually turn on the HALO Home Voice Downlight without using the HALO Home App or accessories, cycle power to the light one time. The lighting will turn ON to its last known dim level until it receives the next HALO Home App, accessory or voice command.

Reset the HALO Home Voice to factory settings

ONLY DO THIS STEP IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO REMOVE THE DEVICE FROM THE APP.
If removal isn't possible, delete it by clicking "my device is broken" and then do the factory reset steps:

To reset the HALO Home Voice Downlight and the Alexa back to factory settings:

  • Using either a standard wall switch, circuit breaker or the air gap switch on an Accessory Dimmer cycle power to the HALO Home Voice as instructed:
    • Repeat this pattern 4 times:
      • Turn OFF for 2 second
      • Turn ON for 5 seconds
  • After a brief delay, the HALO Home Voice Downlight will flash twice to indicate a successful reset.
  • A blue LED ring will display around the Alexa. After approximately 20 seconds, the speaker may state “Connected” (if the originally configured Wi-Fi is available), followed by “Factory data reset.” Once rebooted, the Alexa will audibly state “Speaker is not connected. Please download the app to begin setup.”

Reset the HALO Home Voice Alexa

To reset only the HALO Home Voice Alexa back to factory settings and leave the Downlight connection to HALO Home intact:

  1. Join the mobile device to the same Wi-Fi network that the HALO Home Voice Alexa is connected to.
  2. Open the HALO Home Voice App.
  3. Tap the " " icon on the desired Alexa device.
  4. Tap “Speaker Info”.
  5. Under “Other Information”, tap “Remove”.
  6. Tap “Confirm” to remove the speaker.

Note: The HALO Home Voice Alexa will state “Factory data reset”. The Alexa’s LED ring will turn orange, and then blue as the device resets. Once complete, the Alexa will state “Speaker is not connected, please download the app to begin setup.”

HALO Home Voice Downlight dimming

  • The HALO Home Voice Downlight will dim from 100% to 5%
  • Dimming must be done either with the app or with HALO Home dimmers and accessories

Adjusting HALO Home Voice Downlight color temperature

Use the mobile app to adjust color temperature (CCT) of your Downlight(s). (The HALO Home Voice Downlight has a CCT range of 2700K to 5000K.)

Power cycle behavior

  • An unpaired HALO Home Voice Downlight will turn lighting ON to 100% and will flash twice if power is cycled
  • A paired HALO Home Voice Downlight will turn ON to the last known dim level (If lighting was OFF previous to the power cycle, lighting will turn ON when power is restored)
  • Approximately 30 seconds after power up, the HALO Home Voice’s Alexa will audibly state its connected or disconnected status.
